Question:
Do I have to wear hijab when I’m at home and visitors come?
Answer:
There are a few categories of mahram men – those in front of whom a woman does not need to wear hijab. They are listed in the Qur’anic ayah below. Besides these groups of men, a woman needs to wear hijab in front of any other man, whether at home or outside.
“And say to the believing women that they cast down their looks and guard their private parts and do not display their ornaments except what appears thereof, and let them wear their head-coverings over their bosoms, and not display their ornaments except to their husbands or their fathers, or the fathers of their husbands, or their sons, or the sons of their husbands, or their brothers, or their brothers’ sons, or their sisters’ sons…”(24:31).
Please note that ‘fathers’ includes grandafthers, great-grandfathers etc…, sons includes grand-sons, great grand-sons etc… and nephew includes great-nephews etc.
Also, a woman does not need to wear hijab in front of her son-in-law.
